Gerund

Gerund is a verb in- ing form functioning as a noun.

          Smoke+ing = smoking      Study+ing = studying

Like nouns, gerund may be a subjet, an a object or a complement ia a sentence.

Example:

A.    Gerund as subject

1.     Running is a very good sport.

2.     Watching TV will give you a lot of informasion about the world.

3.     Studying must be regularly done by done student.

4.     Smoking may be cause lung cancer.

B.    Gerund as object ( object of verb)

The use of gerund as an obkect in a senetence in determined by the  verb before the gerund ( verb : like, enjoy, stop, finish, keep, etc. Are followed by gerund)

1.     My brother likes fishing very much

2.     The student in the class enjoy doing hmework in the library.

3.     My English teacher stopped smoking two years ago.

4.     Ann finished writing  the letter very late last night.

C.   Gerund as object (object of preposition)

1.     I always do my homework before watching TV.

2.     The man makes money by Begging.

3.     My English teacher is interested in Studying Chinese.

4.     This tools is usually used for drilling.

D.  Gerund as complement

1.     My favourite hobby is singing.

2.     His profession is teaching.

3.     The most diffucult activity for me is swimming.

4.     His friend’s best exercise is running.
